Exploring the stunning wild countryside of the Galway/Mayo regions on western Ireland, where very little has changed over the centuries, Connemara's haunting landscapes will capture your imagination just as they have done many artists'. On this 8-night trip you'll discover a mystical land of loughs, bogs and beautiful lakes, as well as one of the islands, Inishbofin, which sits remote and wonderful in the wild and windswept Atlantic.
Starting in Westport along the Western Way, you'll pass shimmering loughs, waterfalls and Ireland's only true fjord, Killary Harbour. Enjoy scenic walks through forests and mountain views as you walk beneath the Maumturks mountains and Ben Gorm. Then, spend a night on Inishbofin Island, where history and heritage combine to create a tranquil yet busy atmosphere. Although around only 180 people live there, arts and music is frequent throughout the year, and there is always a festival of some sort to attend. And with some great looped walks, it's the perfect opportunity to take some fantastic photographs of the wild Atlantic scenery, award-winning beaches and fascinating birdlife.
Food is fast becoming an attraction in the area, with rich local produce and delicious freshly-caught seafood. Try the wonderful large mussels and river-caught trout and salmon, or the exquisite lamb. On the first weekend of October, Inishbofin has its own food festival, Bia Bo Finne. Of course, Guinness is everywhere, but local craft beers, gins and whiskies are also becoming increasingly popular.
We stay in a nice mix of hotels; a *** charming town hotel, fjord-side spa hotel, former grand fishing lodge and a relaxing island hotel, complete with spa.
