How to Train for Your Cycling Tour

Cycling tours in FranceCycling is a wonderful way to get an up-close experience when you’re traveling abroad. You get close to the people and the places, and in many parts of the world, your bicycle can become a point of conversation with locals. In Europe in particular, many of our travelers tell us they engage in many pleasant conversations with people who think it’s terrific to see tourists seeing the countryside on bikes.

And while Breakaways offers many easy bicycling tours that don’t require you to be an expert cyclist, a little bit of preparation will make for a smoother trip. Here are a few recommendations for the weeks leading up to your cycling tour:

General Fitness

Chateaux of Loire CyclingOur easiest cycling tours will generally take you on 12-18 mile flat rides every other day. You’ll want to be in good enough shape that a couple of hours on a bike is doable, but keep in mind that you will have rest days. You don’t have to be a regular cyclist, but it may be a good idea to work out on a stationary bike a few times a week for an hour or more for a good month before your trip.

Saddle Time

If you are already fairly fit, or have an established workout routine, you may already be fit enough to ride our intermediate or more difficult trips, but don’t underestimate the importance of “saddle time,” that is, time spent actually sitting on a bicycle. Riding a bike for extended periods can be very uncomfortable at first, but you will get used to it! For this reason, many people like to add spin classes or stationery bike time to their fitness routine in the months leading up to their cycling trip.

As helpful as stationery bikes can be for training for a cycling tour, it is still a good idea to spend some time riding on a road before your first day on the tour. You will be able to practice your bike handling and get used to traffic on the road, as well.

With a little preparation, you’ll pave the way for a comfortable, relaxed trip. You’ll be amazed at the experiences you’ll have on your bike, the views you’ll see, and of course you’ll also have the benefit of knowing that you’ve earned the fantastic meals you’re sure to enjoy along the way!
