  1. Day 1 Arrival day in San Francisco

Welcome to the ‘City by the Bay’ in sunny California. San Francisco is a city that the locals are fiercely proud of, and for good reason. There’s plenty to keep you entertained but the best introduction is booking one of our ‘Urban Adventures’ to discover the city through the eyes of a local guide. A welcome meeting will be held at 18:00 hrs tonight to meet your fellow travellers and tour leader over a welcome dinner.*Please note:* No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to Alcatraz. We recommend you book an extra night in our hotel the night before the tour starts and book your ticket online in advance with Alcatraz Cruises.

  2. Day 2 Monterey

As the Golden Gate Bridge disappears into the distance you make your way to Monterey on California’s rugged central coast. The magnificent Monterey Peninsula has been called the greatest meeting of land, sea and sky and is recognised as an ideal place to spot whales. There are two things that will happen today: the first is that you will hit the Monterey Peninsula Recreation Trail, keeping your eyes peeled for harbour seals, otters and the sparkling Pacific Ocean. The second – and you can’t leave Monterey without doing so – is to venture out on an included whale viewing cruise. It is commonplace to view these magnificent mammals that frequent the area between April and October. In the evening, with excellent nightlife and countless restaurants serving up some of the best seafood around, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice in Monterey./*Optional Activities:*//Kayaking – Lake Tahoe US$25/

  3. Day 3 Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an absolute treasure, so it’s no surprise that this place is loved by visitors and locals alike! Yosemite embodies the spirit of America’s natural parks. Its rugged, towering peaks and magnificent waterfalls have been immortalised by countless photographers. The most famous of the park’s photographers was Ansel Adams, whose gallery sits in the heart of Yosemite Valley and you’ll have plenty of time to take a look at his iconic photographs. The first thing on the list today is the Mist Trail, arguably one of the most outstanding day hikes from Yosemite Valley. The Mist Trail has some superb views as you walk across picturesque bridges up towards Vernal Falls, where the spray from the falls will cool you down on a hot summer’s day, creating striking rainbows along the trail. Continue walking and you reach another beautiful waterfall, Nevada Falls. With no barriers, it really feels like you are well and truly in the California wilderness. Return via the John Muir Trail for the perfect afternoon views and if you’re lucky you may even spot Black Bear and coyotes that roam the surrounding areas. There’s never a dull moment in Yosemite./*Optional Activities:*//• Bike rental – Yosemite US$12-$34//• Float trip on the Merced River – Yosemite US$31/

  4. Day 4 Yosemite National Park

Heading back out on the trails is really the only way to take in the best of what Yosemite has to offer. Therefore, we have included a Yosemite Ranger to lead a hike on the Upper Yosemite Falls trail, an incredible hike to really stretch the legs.Upper Yosemite Falls Trail is one of Yosemite’s oldest historic trails which leads to the top of North America’s tallest waterfall. This trail begins at Camp 4, along the Valley Loop Trail, and immediately starts climbing through a series of switchback trails, through oak woodland. You continue to climb above the tree line and into exposed areas where the only views in front of you are of Yosemite Valley, some of the most beautiful natural vistas on planet earth. Please note there are some steep drops on this trail. At Columbia Rock, you’ll be rewarded by views of Half Dome and Sentinel Rock. On the upper half of the trail you’ll encounter steep sections with uneven surfaces, but the views are more than worth it. At the top of the Yosemite Falls Trail, you have uninterrupted views of Half Dome and Lost Arrow Spire up close, as well as panoramic views of the various peaks.

  5. Day 5 Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay State Park

Mark Twain said Lake Tahoe’s air was pure enough for angels. Beautiful skies, clean air and the cobalt blue lake awaken the senses, especially on Lake Tahoe, the second deepest lake in the USA. It contains enough water to provide every man, woman and child in the country with 200 litres of water a day, every day, for five years. That’s a lot of water! In 1969, Emerald Bay was designated a National Natural Landmark for its brilliant panorama of mountains and glacier carved granite. The Rubicon Trail, which begins in Emerald Bay State Park, is a moderate loop trail along the southwest shore of Lake Tahoe, which is easily accessible and offers some of the finest views of Tahoe. The trail traverses a multitude of different terrains including secluded coves, flat stretches and undulating short elevation gains and drops, twisting along some stunning shoreline cliffs. Part of this hike involves a walk along the south shore of Emerald Bay, an area famous for nesting Eagles.

  6. Day 6 Lake Tahoe

Today you’ll hike a trail to really get you off the beaten path and see panoramic views of the area. If you would prefer to take things a bit easier, why not ask your leader to organise you a mountain bike or kayak to experience the lake at a different pace? The Mount Tallac Trail is a 9.6 mile trail and is the jewel in the crown of mountains which ring Lake Tahoe. From the summit at 9,735ft above sea level, Mt Tallac offers unparalleled and uninterrupted views of the area. This route traverses lush forest, scenic ridgelines, small alpine lakes and meadows well-known for their beautiful wild flowers. This trail will make you work for it but the rewards are phenomenal. Expect to find the trail flooded with chipmunks – Black Bears have also been previously spotted on this hike. How would you choose to spend your final evening of the tour? Well, we think the best way is by drinking champagne on a catamaran cruise around Lake Tahoe as the setting sun lights the water. From the middle of the lake you can truly appreciate the vastness of this jewel in the Sierra Nevadas.

  7. Day 7 Sausalito and San Francisco

Departing Lake Tahoe, you make your way towards the outskirts of San Francisco. Nestled on a beautiful harbour on the bay, Sausalito is undeniably picturesque. It was awarded its name for the tiny willows which once populated the banks of its creeks and much of its fame is a result of its colourful houseboats lining the bay. With beautiful views of San Francisco and Angel Island, it’s easy to see why Sausalito is favoured by San Francisco natives.Finish your day with a leisurely stroll across the world’s most famous bridge, the Golden Gate. With views of the infamous Alcatraz Prison and the city, this is the most wonderfully apt way of bringing your tour to a close. This tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 17:00 hrs. We recommend booking post-tour accommodation if time allows. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.
