All about the The Sound of Music Cycling.

The Salzkammergut area (Lake District) is one of the most impressive regions in the heart of Austria – you’ll always find hidden isolated areas to enjoy a dip or to just sit and skim stones across the peaceful, glassy waters – and you can combine glorious Alpine panoramas with a range of water activities in lakeside villages, including boat trips and watersports, when you fancy a break from cycling.
Our 10-night cycling holiday in the Austrian Lakes is jam-packed with experiences to suit everyone. As well as all the sights, sounds and adventures enjoyed on the 8-night Austrian Lakes Cycling holiday, on this trip you’ll also spend two fantastic nights in lakeside Strobl, where there are watersports, toboggan runs in the summer and an animal park to visit, as well as some fabulous cycle routes. The cycling has a level one rating, and you can extend or shorten your routes on most days.
With so many photo opportunities, the pretty flower-filled valleys sitting beside placid blue lakes, giant mountains and castles reflecting in the water, will remind you of the opening scene of The Sound of Music. On one day, you’ll hop on St Wolfgang’s antique cog railway to the summit of Schafberg for unrivalled Alpine views, whilst on another you can take time to reflect from the 400-year-old ‘floating’ castle in Gmunden, visit Mozart’s museum in St Gilgen and Mondsee’s frescoed high street, and check out Emperor Franz Josef’s summer residence in Bad Ischl (he declared war on Serbia here, which led to WW1). Not forgetting, taking a trip on the Gisela – the last coal-fired paddle steamer on Lake Traunsee – and heading to the fairytale city and Baroque jewel that is Salzburg.
The hotels en route are friendly and different, including lakeside Hotel Post on Austria’s biggest lake, Hotel Grunberg that sits directly under the Grunberg Mountain and **** hotels: one in Bad Ischl, overlooking the River Traun and the other in Strobl, a traditional building with three floors of Austrian wood panelled luxury. We have included eight evening meals on the holiday, leaving you free to choose from one of Mondsee’s inviting restaurants.

Where you stay
Hotel Leitnerbrau
The Leitnerbrau Hotel can be found in the very heart of Mondsee, just a stone’s throw from the famous church used in ‘The Sound of Music’ and a 5-minute stroll from the lakeside where there are frequent summer shows and events. A 30-room, family-run property, it is broad, modern and spacious inside whilst retaining the typical Tyrolean architecture outside. Bedrooms are extremely spacious, with queen size beds and traditional wooden furnishings.
Hotel Post
The Hotel Post sits on the shores of Attersee, offering panoramic views of Austria’s biggest lake as well as a stunning mountain backdrop. The hotel has its own private beach – so you can swim in what is said to be the warmest waters in the Salzkammergut lake district! The hotel is decorated in a traditional Austrian style, and most rooms have lake views and balconies. The hotel also benefits from a lakeside sauna.
Hotel Grunberg
The Hotel Grunberg has a great lakeside location directly below Grunberg Mountain, which soars above the town of Gmunden. The hotel is right on the lakeside, with a view over to the lights of Gmunden itself shimmering on the water. It takes about 10 minutes to cycle into the centre of town. Bedrooms are spacious, and the majority have lake views – they are not typically Austrian, but more contemporary in feel.
Hotel Goldener Ochs
The Hotel Goldender Ochs boasts a prime location in Bad Ischl’s pedestrianised town centre, and sits on the banks of the Traun River. It features a spa, sauna, swimming pool and sun terraces with mountain panorama.
Villa Seilern
The Villa Seilern, with its state-of-the-art spa facilities, is available as an upgrade to the Goldenes Schiff. It is a perfect blend of the modern and the traditional, featuring a C19 villa along with a modern and stylish accommodation block. The bedrooms are spacious and use a mixture of natural materials and all have a balcony. The spa facilities at the hotel include an indoor pool, whirlpool, Bio and Finnish sauna and steam bath. Villa Seilern is available at a supplement – please contact us for full details and prices.
Hotel Bergrose
This is a beautiful 30-room hotel based a 5-minute bike ride from the eastern shore of Wolfgangsee on the outskirts of the village of Strobl. It is a traditional building with wooden balconies and Gothic script on the exterior, and is located on a river bank next to a meadow. It has a lovely secluded garden, three stories of perfect Austrian wood-panelled luxury inside and an indoor pool and spa area. Rooms here are junior suites with shower or bath – all Headwater rooms have a balcony. The rooms are beautifully decorated with quality pine furniture and comfortable beds. Please note that junior suite twins consist of a double bed and a sofa bed. Parents of children under 10 years old should be aware that some rooms at the Hotel Bergrose have a balcony with a step up.
Eating and Drinking

Austria is renowned for wholesome, robust food. The cuisine is a reflection of the culinary exchange that went on during the time of empires – French, Spanish, Dutch, German and Croatian cuisine have all contributed to the flavors, to name just a few. You will be set up for the day with a breakfast of cold meats and cheeses, traditional bread, jam and coffee. Austrians tend to eat heartily at lunch time and less in the evenings, but you will be well catered for at dinner. Local specialities include the ever present ‘Wiener Schnitzel’ (breaded veal cutlet) and various stews of beef and pork. Dumplings, potatoes or noodles are all regular accompaniments along with vegetables. Of course the fresh fish found in the lakes like rainbow trout, brown trout and whitefish will be a feature of many menus, often grilled with butter and herbs, or stuffed with local mushrooms.

Activity Level: 1 (Leisurely)

Average daily distance: 25.4km (15.8 miles).

Terrain and route: Mainly on quiet roads and cycle paths. Some minimal cycling on a designated cycle route but with traffic. 80 % tarmac, 20% gravel.

Our 10-night cycling holiday in the Austrian Lakes is jam-packed with experiences to suit everyone. As well as all the sights, sounds and adventures enjoyed on the 8-night Austrian Lakes Cycling holiday, on this trip you’ll also spend two fantastic nights in lakeside Strobl, where there are water sports, toboggan runs in the summer and an animal park to visit, as well as some fabulous cycle routes. The cycling has a level one rating, and you can extend or shorten your routes on most days.

It is important that you are happy reading maps and following route notes using an app called RidewithGPS, we make these as accurate as possible and they are regularly checked. Where possible we stick to cycle tracks and quiet roads to make the journeys as pleasant as possible, however, on occasion we have to use busier routes.

As this is a self-guided holiday there is no group and no leader. We have suggested that 8yrs is the minimum age for this trip, but as it is self-guided and you will be leading your own family we will ultimately leave this decision up to you. There may be others on the same departure date as you, but you will not be organised together. The route notes contain a 24-hour emergency assistance telephone number should you need it and in emergencies, the local representative is normally able to dispatch a taxi or pick you up themselves. They may wish to charge for this service.

Take your time on the routes – enjoy the views and visit the sights before you set off in the mornings. It is surprising how quickly you can cover the distances on such well-prepared roads and tracks.
We provide detailed notes for each day you move on. If you’d like to make the cycling day longer and see more of the area, or if you arrive at the hotel in good time, you could do the optional circuits suggested at the end of each day’s notes. Alternatively, these are ideal short routes for your stay put days.

The notes mention places of interest as well as any confusing junctions or anything else of which to be aware. We don’t give any times, as these will vary with different routes – and how fast you cycle. We do give distances, usually by the most direct route.

Mr Cole

A very efficiently organised, stress-free holiday, taking in the beauty of the Austrian Lakes. “Ride With GPS” made navigation very simple, and the route was predominantly flat. Some roads were busier than anticipated, but this was because there were no alternatives between or around some lakes. Reps were enthusiastic and attentive throughout, and we valued their advice. All hotels were also excellent, although half-board was perhaps unnecessary in some of the larger towns, where it would have been fun to explore alternative food options.

We had a great holiday cycling in Austria. Our reps Jill and Colin were fantastic, easy to contact when needed and very good at giving us ideas for stops or outings on the rest days. Some of the cycling was next to a busy road but whenever possible it was on quiet roads and cycle paths. The people working in the hotels were all very friendly and helpful. We were lucky enough to have great weather, even a bit too warm towards the end but there were many places to swim in the lakes and cool down. We enjoyed it very much.

Ms Tulloch

I have used Headwater many times for holidays and always come back to them. This trip was excellent, great hotels, all different with welcoming staff and good food.

I thoroughly enjoy the anticipation of cycling onto the next destination, never knowing what we will pass on the way and the sights we will see ( often a delightful surprise).

Knowing our luggage will be there at the other end leaving the panniers with the minimum weight inside is liberating.

This holiday had smaller mileages than we have had previously but we always used the map to detour off at leisure and explored with the bikes on our days off.

The reps Jill and Colin were marvellous, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable coupled with enthusiasm for the area, a winning combination.

The briefing was thorough and clear plus additional texts during the week with updates on weather or route.

Would recommend this trip for the scenery, green meadows, alpine buildings and a sense of the true Austria. Jane Tulloch

Mrs Attard Montalt

For my husband and I and our 19 and 20 year old sons, this was our first Headwater holiday. Our group consists of 3 reasonably fit casual cyclists and one extremely fit competitive cyclist, nevertheless it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all. The routes were superb, mostly on country lanes and cycle paths with a few stretches on the road. Hills were infrequent and in the main doable. The scenery was stunning and the wildlife a pleasure to behold (deer, birds, salamander, butterflies etc) the choice and location of hotels was mainly excellent l, especially at Gmunden, Bad Ischal and Wolfgang. The route allowed you lots of time to organize your own sightseeing and additional cycling. In this regard a visit to the salt mine in Hadshtalt and the train trip from Wolfgang (although a bit pricey) were great fun and are highly recommended. Last but by no means least our Headwater agents in Austria were simply superb in all respects. If the opportunity arises we would be very happy to plan another holiday with Headwater.
