All about the Salzburg The Austrian Lake District.

This 7-night holiday gives a lovely introduction to the Austrian lakes district, Salzkammergut, a land intrinsically linked with ‘The Sound of Music’ and Mozart. This is picture-postcard Austria: shimmering blue lakes, deep green meadows, alpine villages and traditional dress.
Beginning in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart on the Salzach river and then to Lake Mondsee, where the local church was the location of the famous wedding in The Sound of Music. Then it’s on to Bad Ischl, perhaps the jewel in the crown of all the towns you visit en route. There is so much to do and see here, you might want to have extra nights. From Bad Ischl you cycle to the beautiful lakeside town of Strobl (from where you can visit fairytale Salzburg) before arriving back for your final night on the shore of Lake Mondsee.
Our centrally-located hotels are extremely friendly and provide a wonderful contrast throughout your holiday. The Hotel Goldenes Ochs in Bad Ischl has a spa with sauna and swimming pool, whilst the Hotel Bergrose has more of a traditional feel, with wooden interior and Gothic script on the exterior.

  1. Day 1 Day 1 Arrive in Salzburg

Arrive in Salzburg, a Baroque jewel with a UNESCO-recognised historic centre and the birthplace of Mozart on the Salzach river. (Staying at Markus Sittikus, Breakfast only)

  2. Day 2 Day 2 Salzburg to Mondsee

Transfer to the Hotel Leitnerbrau in Mondsee and visit St Basilica before dinner (payable locally). (Staying at Hotel Leitnerbrau, Breakfast only)

  3. Day 3 Day 3 Mondsee to Bad Ischl 40km/25mi

Follow the shore of Mondsee before joining Attersee, Austria’s largest lake, at the pretty lakeside town of Unterach. Stop for lunch at the lake shore before continuing on, following the river Traun, into Bad Ischl. (Staying at Hotel Goldener Ochs, Half Board)

  4. Day 4 Day 4 At Bad Ischl

There is so much to do in Bad Ischl that you might want to add extra nights here! Visit the imperial spa, thermal salt baths, the Katrin cable car, the Siriuskogl viewing platform, museums and villas. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride, people-watch on the riverside esplanade or enjoy coffee and cake in the famous Zauner restaurant. Alternatively, cycle to the beautiful mountain lake of Hallstatt and visit the famous salt mines with their subterranean salt lake. (Staying at Hotel Goldener Ochs, Half Board)

  5. Day 5 Day 5 Bad Ischl to Strobl 17km/11mi

Explore the Kaiservilla, Emperor Franz Josef’s former holiday home, before setting off along the banks of the River Ischl. Sunlight sparkles on the water as you pass tiny shrines hidden in the pines below the Leonsberg and Bleckwand peaks. You could take an optional detour to visit historic St Wolfgang before arriving in Strobl. (Staying at Hotel Bergrose, Half Board)

  6. Day 6 Day 6 At Strobl

Spend the day in beautiful lakeside Strobl with its watersports, summer toboggan run and animal park. The popular beachfront is ideal for a cooling swim, or you could join a boat cruise on the lake. (Staying at Hotel Bergrose, Half Board)

  7. Day 7 Day 7 Strobl to Mondsee 29km/18.5mi

Keeping close to Wolfgangsee’s southern shore, a level cycling track through a tiny nature reserve brings you to lovely St Gilgen. Visit the Mozart museum or take the cable car up Zwolferhorn for stunning 360ree; views. In the afternoon, continue along past Krottensee and coast downhill back to Lake Mondsee. (Staying at Hotel Leitnerbrau, Breakfast only)

  8. Day 8 Day 8 Leave Mondsee

Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Austria for all customers under 12 years. As we are unable to provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own. Please see our Planning your holiday page for full details.

Where you stay
Markus Sittikus
The 4 star Markus Sittikus is a beautifully presented hotel, based in an 18C building with a mustard facade located in a quiet side street not far from the Mirabell palace, just a 15 minute walk from the old city. Inside the hotel the decor is attractive and individual, with bold colours like mustard yellow and red tartan in the comfortable bar area, and some colourful murals painted on the walls throughout the building. Public rooms have period furniture and the upbeat interior, combined with the personal attention you receive from the friendly staff, make a stay here particularly memorable. The hotel has 39 rooms though it feels smaller, with television (CNN/BBC), direct dial phones and hairdryers. Each one is individually decorated with attractive colour combinations and solid wooden furniture, in keeping with the age and status of the building. It is also one of the few hotels in Salzburg to have a garden to relax in, if you are looking for some respite after doing the sights.
Hotel Leitnerbrau
The Leitnerbrau Hotel can be found in the very heart of Mondsee, just a stone’s throw from the famous church used in ‘The Sound of Music’ and a 5-minute stroll from the lakeside where there are frequent summer shows and events. A 30-room, family-run property, it is broad, modern and spacious inside whilst retaining the typical Tyrolean architecture outside. Bedrooms are extremely spacious, with queen size beds and traditional wooden furnishings.
Hotel Goldener Ochs
The Hotel Goldener Ochs boasts a prime location in Bad Ischl’s pedestrianised town centre, and sits on the banks of the Traun River. It features a spa, sauna, swimming pool and sun terraces with mountain panorama.
Hotel Bergrose
This is a beautiful 30-room hotel based a 5-minute bike ride from the eastern shore of Wolfgangsee on the outskirts of the village of Strobl. It is a traditional building with wooden balconies and Gothic script on the exterior, and is located on a river bank next to a meadow. It has a lovely secluded garden, three stories of perfect Austrian wood-panelled luxury inside and an indoor pool and spa area. Rooms here are junior suites with shower or bath – all Headwater rooms have a balcony. The rooms are beautifully decorated with quality pine furniture and comfortable beds. Please note that junior suite twins consist of a double bed and a sofa bed. Parents of children under 10 years old should be aware that some rooms at the Hotel Bergrose have a balcony with a step up.
