All about the Austrian Lakes Cycling.

Our 8-night cycling holiday in the Austrian Lakes is fantastically varied. It’s a wonderful mix of spectacular scenic views, shoreline routes and swimming opportunities galore. The cycling is graded as one bike-wheel rating, but you can extend your routes on all days.
Every stop brings new discoveries such as St Wolfgang’s antique cog railway to the summit of Schafberg, Mozart’s museum in St Gilgen, and Mondsee’s frescoed high street; the church here was the location of the famous wedding in ‘The Sound of Music’! When you fancy a change from cycling, local buses and boats shuttle between delightful lakeside villages making exploration easy. Regional highlights include Emperor Franz Josef’s summer residence in Bad Ischl (he declared war on Serbia here, which led to WW1), Gmunden’s ‘floating’ castle, Seeschloss Ort, and its porcelain town hall bells, and an unforgettable paddle steamer on Lake Traun below spectacular mountain peaks, not to mention a trip to Salzburg itself.
Our hotels are extremely friendly and provide a wonderful contrast throughout your holiday, from the centrally-located Hotel Leitnerbrau to the lakeside retreat in Gmunden. We have included three evening meals on the holiday, leaving you free to choose during your stays in Mondsee and Bad Ischl.

  • Visit fairy-tale Salzburg: Baroque palaces, historic castles, stunning gardens
  • Enjoy masses of ‘rest day’ choices: boat trips, water sports, cable car rides
  1. Day 1 Day 1: Arrive in Mondsee

Arrive at your centrally located hotel in Mondsee, with time to explore before your evening meal (pay locally).

  2. Day 2 Day 2: Mondsee to Weissenbach 21km/13mi

Today you follow the shore of Mondsee before joining Attersee at the pretty lakeside town of Unterach and following the lakeside to Weissenbach.

  3. Day 3 Day 3: Weissenbach to Gmunden 42km/26mi

Follow a route on the eastern side of the lake through Steinbach and the scenic Weyregg, before passing through Schorfling where you can visit the Gustav Klimt museum. The backdrop of 1000m peaks loom over the lake and are mirrored in the water. As you head towards Gmunden and Traunsee you will pass fields of wheat fringed by poppies and cornflowers.

  4. Day 4 Day 4: At Gmunden

Today, take a trip on Gisela, the last coal-fired paddle steamer, once used by Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The cable car at the top of the Grunberg (944m) offers wonderful views at the summit, where you look down on Gmunden’s esplanade and the romantic Seeschloss Ort, a ’floating’ castle on the lake dating from 17th century.

  5. Day 5 Day 5: Gmunden to Bad Ischl 19km/12mi or 37km/23.5mi

Taking the boat across to Ebensee, you’ll stop off at Traunkirchen to visit the church with its famous fisherman’s pulpit. Alternatively, you could cycle from Gmunden along the western shore of Traunsee to Ebensee, and enjoy the spectacular fjord-type scenery. From Ebensee, cycling a beautiful riverside route, you’ll criss-cross the River Traun to Bad Ischl where you’ll spend the next three nights.

  6. Day 6 Day 6: At Bad Ischl

You’re spoilt for choice for things to see and do in Bad Ischl: the imperial spa, the salt mines, the ice cave in Obertraun, thermal salt baths, the Katrin cable car, the Siriuskogl viewing platform, museums and villas. Perhaps take a horse-drawn carriage ride, people-watch on the riverside esplanade, or enjoy coffee and cake in the famous Zauner restaurant.

  7. Day 7 Day 7: At Bad Ischl

Continue exploring Bad Ischl or take an optional cycle ride from Halstatt.

  8. Day 8 Day 8: Bad Ischl to Mondsee 43km/27mi

Today’s route takes you west along the river through country villages and meadows, with the opportunity to stop at the waterfront in Strobl before heading past the shimmering Wolfgangsee. Going either north or south of the lake, you’ll pass beautiful St Gilgen at the top of the lake before heading onto Mondsee, your home for the last night.

  9. Day 9 Day 9: Leave Mondsee

Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Austria for all customers under 12 yrs. As we are unable to provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own. Please see our Planning you holiday page for full details.

Where you stay
Hotel Leitnerbrau
The Leitnerbrau Hotel can be found in the very heart of Mondsee, just a stone’s throw from the famous church used in ‘The Sound of Music’ and a 5-minute stroll from the lakeside where there are frequent summer shows and events. A 30-room, family-run property, it is broad, modern and spacious inside whilst retaining the typical Tyrolean architecture outside. Bedrooms are extremely spacious, with queen size beds and traditional wooden furnishings.
Hotel Post
The Hotel Post sits on the shores of Attersee, offering panoramic views of Austria’s biggest lake as well as a stunning mountain backdrop. The hotel has its own private beach – so you can swim in what is said to be the warmest waters in the Salzkammergut lake district! The hotel is decorated in a traditional Austrian style, and most rooms have lake views and balconies. The hotel also benefits from a lakeside sauna.
Hotel Grunberg
The Hotel Grunberg has a great lakeside location directly below Grunberg Mountain, which soars above the town of Gmunden. The hotel is right on the lakeside, with a view over to the lights of Gmunden itself shimmering on the water. It takes about 10 minutes to cycle into the centre of town. Bedrooms are spacious, and the majority have lake views – they are not typically Austrian, but more contemporary in feel.
Goldenes Schiff
The Hotel Goldenes Schiff is located at the bank of the River Traun at the heart of Bad Ischl, only a two-minute walk from the thermal baths of the Eurotherme Bad Ischl and five minutes from the train station. You will immediately fall in love with the peace and quiet and the unique view of the picturesque landscape of the Salzkammergut region.

Eating and Drinking

All continental breakfasts and 3 evening meals are included.

Austria is renowned for wholesome, robust food. The cuisine is a reflection of the culinary exchange that went on during the time of empires – French, Spanish, Dutch, German and Croatian cuisine have all contributed to the flavours, to name just a few. You will be set up for the day with a breakfast of cold meats and cheeses, traditional bread, jam and coffee. Austrians tend to eat heartily at lunch time and less in the evenings, but you will be well catered for at dinner. Local specialities include the ever present ‘Wiener Schnitzel’ (breaded veal cutlet) and various stews of beef and pork. Dumplings, potatoes or noodles are all regular accompaniments along with vegetables. Of course the fresh fish found in the lakes like rainbow trout, brown trout and whitefish will be a feature of many menus, often grilled with butter and herbs, or stuffed with local mushrooms.

Is this trip for you?

Activity Level: 1 (Leisurely)
Average daily distance: 34km (21 miles).
No. of days cycling: 4 (including 1 optional rides)
Terrain and route: mainly on quiet roads and cycle paths. Some minimal cycling on a designated cycle route but with traffic. 80 % tarmac, 20% gravel.

Our 8-night cycling holiday in the Austrian Lakes is fantastically varied with something to suit travellers of all ages. It’s a wonderful mix of spectacular scenic views, gentle shoreline routes and swimming opportunities galore. The cycling is graded as leisurely/moderate, but you can extend your routes on all days.
It is important that you are happy reading maps and following route notes using an app called RidewithGPS, we make these as accurate as possible and they are regularly checked. Where possible we stick to cycle tracks and quiet roads to make the journeys as pleasant as possible, however, on occasion we have to use busier routes.

As this is a self-guided holiday there is no group and no leader. We have suggested that 8yrs is the minimum age for this trip, but as it is self-guided and you will be leading your own family we will ultimately leave this decision up to you. There may be others on the same departure date as you, but you will not be organised together. The route notes contain a 24-hour emergency assistance telephone number should you need it and in emergencies, the local representative is normally able to dispatch a taxi or pick you up themselves. They may wish to charge for this service.

Take your time on the routes – enjoy the views and visit the sights before you set off in the mornings. It is surprising how quickly you can cover the distances on such well-prepared roads and tracks.
We provide detailed notes for each day you move on. If you’d like to make the cycling day longer and see more of the area, or if you arrive at the hotel in good time, you could do the optional circuits suggested at the end of each day’s notes. Alternatively, these are ideal short routes for your stay put days.

The notes mention places of interest as well as any confusing junctions or anything else of which to be aware. We don’t give any times, as these will vary with different routes – and how fast you cycle. We do give distances, usually by the most direct route.

From the very first phone call to Headwater, all e-mails and posts were polite, helpful and welcoming. Helen was always happy to answer any questions and arrange any additional requests promptly and professionally. I was always pleased to talk to her and nothing was too much trouble. This gave both my husband and I so much confidence in the company and our holiday. Our overseas reps (Collin and Jill) sent us a lovely postcard introducing themselves a week before the holiday. This was such a lovely thought and the help and support continued for the duration of the holiday. Collin and Jill were lovely, kind people who offered more than we could have expected. Thank you so much. Hotels were very good and in some lovely locations, swimming in a lake was one of the highlights of the holiday!

Well worth the money and the Austrian scenery and people were brilliant. Would thoroughly recommend this holiday and have "earmarked" a future one for next year!

A lovely holiday in a beautiful part of the world. The hotels were chosen well and we had a couple of lovely lake views. We enjoyed having two and three night stops so we could explore the area at our leisure. We had mixed weather - you have to prepare for rain in mountainous regions - but it didn't stop us getting out and about. We decided to go for electric bikes for the first time and what a revelation they were. It meant that we could enthusiastically head off the beaten track and tackle sights that would have been exhausting to reach with just gears. We would like to thank Colin and Jill who were brilliant reps - so helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. We finished up with an extra night in Salzburg which Headwater were happy to arrange. One negative aspect of the holiday which is worth mentioning for those planning to bring children - the lakeside roads are very busy with traffic in early July and although 95% have safe cycle paths alongside the road, it can be a bit gruelling at times. So maybe it would be a good idea to take the boat sometimes.

Very good holiday. Our room in Bad Ischl was an upgrade (which we had to accept if we wanted this specific holiday). We travelled in a group of 7 and one couple did not get an upgraded room. Although the rooms were lovely we would all have preferred not to have to pay the extra.

Your reps Jill and Colin were excellent. I would go as far to say the best reps I have ever had on any holiday. Friendly, professional and nothing was too much trouble. I hope as a company you realise what an asset they are to you. The sat nav routing was very good. Only at one very awkward junction it was not clear. I would certainly recommend using it but would want the paper maps as back up, especially if the phone ran out of power.
