  • Stay just outside medieval Sarlat in a peaceful *** hotel with 3 acres of parkland
  • Amazing Dordogne landscape, fairytale chateaux, troglodyte caves
  • Traditional local market (Saturdays)
  • Gentle walking and some quite strenuous cycling on well-marked tranquil riverside paths and greenways
  • Visit famous local attractions including Beynac Castle, Rocamadour, Les Eyzies and the Lascaux Cave

Sarlat (or Sarlat-la-Caneda) has the highest concentration of medieval, Renaissance and C17 facades of any town in France and its richly ornamented stone buildings are protected by law. You'll feel like a time traveler as you wander the narrow streets peeping through archways into ancient courtyards as the center of the old town has impeccably restored buildings and is mostly car-free. Places to visit include the large Benedictine Abbey, the cathedral and the hubbub of Sarlat's famous traditional local market (on Saturdays).

We provide optional suggestions for every day of your stay, with a good mix of walking and cycling, usually at 1 or 1+ boot and 2-bike level. There's everything from a self-guided exploration of Sarlat's medieval heart to rewarding day walks. It's a short drive to the start of each walk, all of which have routes along a mix of footpaths, tracks and small country lanes, and range anywhere from 2km/1.2mi to 20km/32mi, depending on what you fancy. Perhaps start by admiring the cave paintings at Abri du Cap Blanc, following paths around to the Chateau de Commarque, or from Beynac, walk to the Jardins de Marqueyssac and along the river.

There is a choice of bike rides starting just north of Sarlat. You could pick up the riverside greenway and pass through several pretty villages before turning into the hills, or pedal to some beautiful chateaux. If you cycle to Sarlat train station and get off at the next stop in St Cyprien, there is a route to Beynac, visiting two chateaux along the way.

Hotel Meysset is located in a 3 acre park just 1.2 miles from the center of Sarlat and features a garden, library, a heated outdoor swimming pool and a sun terrace. The rooms offer en suite bathroom with bath or shower and flat-screen TV. The hotel's restaurant serves regional specalities every evening. Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the property.
