Blue Flag beaches and marinas are well known throughout Europe, with more than 4000 beaches and marinas in 49 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean and more. Given the USA doesn’t participate in the voluntary eco-award, the designation isn’t as well known here.
The prestigious Blue Flag designation is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), an international nonprofit and nongovernmental agency based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The goal is to foster a greater awareness of the natural treasure of white sandy beaches, ocean flora and beach side animals through education and sustainable environmental management. The water quality is monitored for safety for swimmers as well as for the benefit of flora and fauna including the health of coral reefs in the vicinity of the beach along with another 33 strict criteria of safety and services.
Many of our tours at Breakaway Adventures give you the opportunity to enjoy beaches that fly the Blue Flag – here are just a few:
- Costa Rica Wildlife Walk – The beach at Playa Hermosa
- Undiscovered French Riviera –Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat’s Marquet beach (there are a total of 91 Blue flag beaches on the Cote d’Azur!)
- Italy’s Contrasts of Puglia Cycling – Monopoil’s Lido Rosso beach
- Highlights of Gozo Cycling – Xghara beach
- Exploring the French Caribbean – Matinique’s Port de plaisance du Marin in Le Marin
- Delights of Dalmatian Coast Croatia – Bol’s Beach Zlatni Rat
- Catalan Classic Walk Spain – on day 6 you’ll walk via the lovely Tamariu Beach on the way to Palagrugell
- Cycling Spain’s Jurassic Coast – Llanes’ El Sablon beach.
- Dorset England’s Jewels of the Jurassic Coast Walk – Sandbanks peninsula
Spain has consistently topped the list of the most Blue Flags awarded!
We’d be interested to hear why the USA doesn’t participate in this program.
