Breakaway Adventures Offers Valentine’s Tours Fit for the Gods
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — Couples looking to fan the flames of love beyond chocolates and flowers this Valentine’s Day can follow in the footsteps of the Greek Goddess of Love Aphrodite (also known as Venus) on a walking or cycling tour through Cyprus, the Mediterranean island off the coast of Turkey that she called home. With Feb. 17, 2007 departures, the “Following Aphrodite’s Trail” walking and “Secrets of Cyprus Cycling” tours, offered by Breakaway Adventures, a company that specializes in fully-supported independent walking and cycling tours, lets travelers surprise their sweetheart with a trip on Valentine’s Day and head off to the island just days later.
The tour lets couples explore the sea where the Goddess of Love emerged as depicted in the famous painting “The Birth of Venus” and even swim near the boulder, Petra tou Romiou, where she surfaced. Travelers can also take a dip in the Baths of Aphrodite on the Akamas Peninsula, located on Cyprus’ most westerly tip, where Aphrodite bathed with her lover, Adonis. According to legend, couples can also hike to the Fontana Amorosa, a fountain on the Akamas Peninsula where Aphrodite used to drink, and take a sip to spice up their romance.
Other sites on the tour include Mt Olympus, the Adonis Nature Trail, a ruined Byzantine monastery, the 16th Century chapel of Ayia Paraskevi, miles of white sandy beaches, small hamlets and villages, fishing harbors and exotic Mediterranean flora. Hotels on the tour are charming, one overlooking the harbor at Agios Georgios and another overlooking the sea.
Both tours are eight-days and seven-nights and range in price from $1,530-$1829 for the walking tour and $1651-$1864 for the cycling tour with a two-person minimum. Other dates of departure run now through May 26 and from Sept. 8-Dec. 29. As fully-supported independent tours, guests travel at their own pace without a guide, but with a local staff member always on call to assist with bike issues, deliver wine and move luggage from place to place. Travelers meet at the beginning of the tour for a briefing and question and answer session where they receive a detailed itinerary with maps and visual pointers to guide them. The cost includes transportation to and from the airport, lodging, breakfast and dinner. Airfare is not included.
“Cyprus is a wonderful destination for couples and a great winter getaway that boasts more than 300 days of sun a year,” says Carol Keskitalo, co-owner of Breakaway Adventures. “Not only is it known as the home of Aphrodite, but Marc Antony once gave the island to Cleopatra as a symbol of his love, as well. If ever there was a place to fall in love for the first time or rekindle romance, this is it!”
