Secret Valleys of Ronda

The Alto Genal – a hidden Garden of Eden with magical mountain scenery
Ancient Moorish whitewashed villages, cast adrift in time Spectacular bird life – eagle, honey buzzard, parakeet and hoopoe Fabulous walks in National Parks and around Ronda’s Roman ruins Acclaimed boutique hotel with superb hosts and exquisite cuisine

Our new independent walking holiday in Andalucia is a bit like discovering a secret Spanish garden that everyone else has overlooked! The Alto Genal region is a vast area of mysterious cork oak shrouded valleys, just 20 minutes drive south of the famous bullfighting town of Ronda. Silence reigns supreme here, and time slows to such a languid pace that you would never imagine it is only one range of hills back from the bustling Mediterranean coast!

Dramatic scenery of ragged limestone mountains and high cliffs has protected this hidden Garden of Eden from outsiders. Bird life is spectacularly varied with many migrating species passing through, and the few locals who live here - to whom visitors are still a bit of a novelty - are no less colourful or entertaining! Scattered throughout these valleys are rural tracks and paths linking a series of timeless whitewashed Moorish villages that cling limpet-like to the verdant hillsides, their churches and alleyways rich with history and charm.

One of these gorgeous villages – Cartajima – is your base for the week. With a hire car included, our circular walks not only explore the Alto Genal valley on your doorstep, but also take in two of Spain’s loveliest and most dramatic National Parks nearby; The Sierra de las Nieves to the east, and the jagged peaks of the Sierra de Grazalema to the west, as well as the spectacular town of Ronda nearby.
