This walking holiday explores the lovely Vainerina in the western Apennines, one of the best kept secrets in Italy and a magnificent lush profusion of limestone gorges, waterfalls and natural springs. It is a land of deep green ridges and rounded mountain peaks, of mediaeval hilltop fortifications with resident golden eagles, and of black truffles and wild olives.

You follow ancient mule tracks, originally used by Pope Pius IX, through figs, plums and apricots, up through hillsides thick with cypresses and beeches and across the tops of Monte Santo and Castelmonte (1038m). You stay on the holy  mountain of Monteluco and stroll through its sacred holm oak forests, untouched since Pagan times. There is time to explore the fascinating Etruscan city of Spoleto and a chance to enjoy delicious fresh trout straight from the River Nera in Scheggino, as well as the legendary black truffle dishes of Cerreto. 

Much of the walk is at high level, through mountain pastures carpeted with orchids, edelweiss and tulips. You walk through olive groves that have been farmed since Roman times and produce the finest olive oil in Italy. And, of course, there is always time to explore the rich heritage of artistic treasures that make this ancient heartland of Umbria so fascinating.
