The Via Francigena is an ancient European route of pilgrimage that was first completed by the Archbishop of Canterbury back in 990AD, when he walked to Rome and back to receive his Papal appointment in person! To this day, the route he followed and documented still links Canterbury Cathedral in Kent to St Peter's Basilica.
This holiday uncovers the glorious final stages of this journey between Orvieto in Umbria to Rome. Along the way, the Via Francigena follows Roman roads, rural tracks and country lanes that link a string of central Italy's loveliest fortified hilltop towns. Each walking day offers superb panoramas: Orvieto perched atop steep volcanic cliffs, Bolsena's castle mirrored in the still lake below, and Montefiascone's cathedral bells chiming across wide river valleys.
Door to door walks link hotels all the way from your start in Orvieto to the outskirts of Rome, where we have included a couple of transfers to ease your approach into the capital. You move on daily, apart from two night stops in Viterbo and Vetralla.
A range of quirky and charming hotels punctuate the route, many of them family owned and run. Picnics are included on all walking days, and evening meals with wine are included everywhere except Orvieto, Viterbo and Rome, where there is lots of choice on your doorstep.
