This independent hotel-to-hotel walking holiday explores the Triglav National Park encompassing Slovenia’s highest peak, Mt Triglav (2864m), and the Julian Alps that border Italy and Austria. Following well marked Alpine paths you’ll discover jagged limestone peaks, high flower-filled meadows, thundering waterfalls and half timbered mountain villages.
Starting in the charming Alpine village of Kranjska Gora, from where you enjoy sweeping vistas over the Austrian and Italian Alps, your route then crosses the mighty Vrsic Pass into the hidden Trenta Valley, a part of the country few travellers ever see. Continuing along the course of the beautiful Soca River – one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, marbled trout swim in its crystalline turquoise waters – you discover sparkling waterfalls, and flower-filled plateaux encircled by dramatic peaks. In Bovec, on the Italian border, the area is littered with reminders from Napoleonic and WW1 battles, including the dramatic Kluze fortress, whereas moving south to Kobarid, the landscape has a more Mediterranean feel. A popular rest day activity here is a wine tasting trip in the sun-drenched slopes of the neighbouring Vipava vineyards. The final section of your walk takes you north again to beautiful Lake Bohinj. In the shadow of Mt Triglav, this is one of Slovenia’s most beautiful lakes and a great place to relax at the end of your week.
The hotels that you stay in all have their particular charm. But our favourites have to be our gastronomic hotel in Kobarid run by the friendly Hvala family and the delightful Dobra Vila hotel in Bovec with its 1920’s house party feel – guests can relax in the cosy drawing room by the fire (early and late season), or on sunnier days on the Alpine terrace. Dinners are a celebration of local cuisine - expect to be offered fresh trout from the rivers or risotto with black truffle.
