This independent three-centre walking holiday in Hungary’s eastern
wine region takes place in the country’s oldest range of hills. Known as the Bukk, (meaning ‘beech’ in Hungarian), this swathe of forested high ground is a protected National Park, bordered by Slovakia to the north and Ukraine to the east.
Your holiday starts with two nights in the charming Baroque wine town of Eger, famed for its locally produced hearty red “Bulls Blood” wines. Don’t miss the amazing warren of mossy, cave-like wine cellars - dug deep into the hillside and filled with enticing dusty wine casks, you almost expect to be served drinks by a local hobbit! You’ll also enjoy the café society on the central cobbled square below the C16 castle.
From Eger, you walk north passing maple and lime trees to the hillside holiday village of Szilvasvarad, in the heart of the picturesque Szalajka Valley, filled with waterfalls and hidden caves. After two nights in our luxurious hillside
**** hotel, you head east over the park’s central plateau to a glorious lakeside château in Lillafured for your final three nights. Narrow gauge trains hoot and rattle through the valley here, dropping walkers off in remote woodland stations – it is a great way to cover more ground with no additional effort!
Our hotels throughout are a mixture of charming **** properties, (all with private swimming pools), in traditional towns and villages. All offer a warm welcome and high comfort levels with our favorite perhaps being the graceful chateua in Lillafured with its gorgeous terrace overlooking Lake Hamori.
