This spectacular walking holiday takes place in the north west of the island, in a little known region called La Isla Baja, “Tenerife’s Secret”. It is an area full of dramatic contrasts, from lush terraced valleys, plunging gorges and panoramic seascapes, to rocky barrancos(river valleys), cool pine forests and spectacular volcanic geology – a perfect recipe for varied walking.  The walking trails – once the only lines of communication between settlements - still link tiny whitewashed villages and towns, where local fiestas and colourful celebrations are a part of everyday life.

As gateway to the New World, La Isla Bajawas the Tenerife of kings and nobles. Visible history is most obvious in the little town of Garachico. Once the most important coastal trading town on Tenerife, it is replete with 17C palaces and other architectural gems built by rich merchants.

Our hotel near here is one of the oldest Canarian fincasor homesteads on the islands, dating from the 16th century. Passed down the generations to your hosts, Baltasar and Elena Ponte, it boasts just 26 individually furnished characterful en suite rooms surrounding a pretty central courtyard in the middle of a 60 hectare banana plantation. The traditional restaurant overlooks acres of swaying banana trees stretching to the estate’s private bay, there’s also a pool and tennis court.
