Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing in Lamoura

Day 1
Jérome meets you at Geneva airport and take you to your hotel (45 mins).

Day 2
The green trail behind the hotel is the perfect place to learn the basics.  Soon you’ll be gliding with ease along the fresh cut tracks.  After lunch you follow an easy trail that winds around the frozen lake of Lamoura. With the sun glinting on snow laden spruce trees, it’s on to the bustling little L’Aniversis mountain café for a warming chocolat chaud on their sun terrace before heading back to the hotel.

Day 3
Your second lesson concentrates on the snow plough then, after lunch, chance to practise on the Chaux Berthod trail.  Just five minutes from the hotel, this snowy plateau feels much more remote, locals call it Petit Canada! Winding in and out of spruce trees, look out for fox and deer.  Into the sunlight once more, you’ll enjoy sweeping panoramas over the Mont du Jura as you make your way back.  Why not try tobogganing (hire locally) before dinner?

Day 4
This morning’s trail follows in part the Grande Traversée du Jura.  You’ll glide along through  forest where grand tetras and buzzards flit through the trees. After lunch, we’ll drive you to Les Rousses to follow a trail that leads to La Petite Laponie (Little Lapland).  This broad open valley, dotted with wooden cabins and spruce trees, does have a Scandinavian feel, but the views over the distant Swiss Alps could only be had in the Jura.

Day 5
The ski bus is a great way to explore today. You could try a change of pace at the downhill slopes at La Serra or on the open air ice rink at Premanon.  Les Rousses’ snowy streets are lined with tempting restaurants and its fort contains one of the largest fromâgeriesin France, a great place for cheese-tasting.  Or there’s the Musée Lapidairein Lamoura where you can learn more about the ancient jurassien art of diamond cutting.

Day 6
Today’s trail winds in and out of forest - look out for black grouse scuffling through the undergrowth. If you’re lucky you’ll spot chamois and deer prints in the snow as you glide on to La Serra mountain café for a warming vin chaud.  Then on to our favourite picnic spot, beside an old house decorated in tavaillon style (Jura art of “thatching” houses with tree bark). Afterwards it’s an easy glide through the hushed forest to return to the hotel in time for an  apéritif before dinner.

Day 7
On ski or snowshoes it’s a gentle climb through the Fôret de Massacre. First stop is La Petite Tanière, a welcoming forest hideaway where you can relax in the sunshine with a coffee. Then onwards through the forest for lunch at Châlet de la Frasse,a cosy warming hut with great views.  Afterwards it’s above the treeline to climb Crêt Pela (1495m), the Jura’s highest peak.  The week’s ski trails are mapped out below and ahead are the Swiss Alps glistening in the sunshine – a great end to your week!

Day 8
We take you back to Geneva airport after breakfast.
