Shropshire Castles Cycling

  • Explore 'Slow food' capital Ludlow, Church Stretton's 'Little Switzerland' and Bishops Castle's famous brewery pubs
  • Visit Roman battlefields, Victorian farms, National Trust Parks and Bronze Age trading routes
  • Wild heather , ancient oak woods, bluebells and orchids
  • Varied & challenging cycling days taking in country pubs, coffee houses and quaint tea rooms
  • Stylish, historic hotels and inns: excellent regional cuisine choices

This new independent cycling holiday (run by our expert local partners) explores beautiful Shropshire, where castles, fortresses and fortified country houses are scattered over the battle-scarred landscape like chaff, a legacy of conflict ranging from Roman occupation to the English Civil War. To say life moves slowly here is an understatement – even today passengers on the Swansea to Shrewsbury railway line still flag the train down by hand!

After a night in the 'slow food' capital of Ludlow, arguably the prettiest market town in all England with over 500 listed buildings nestled beneath the castle walls, you coast through a series of picturesque river valleys. Otters play on sandy riverbanks as you pass creaking water mills, ruined castles and regal country houses en route to Bishop's Castle, where quirky antiques shops jostle for attention with fabulous award winning pubs. From here, you cycle east to cross the LongMynd hills - the most southerly grouse moors in England and a National Trust Park. You spend two nights in the Victorian Spa town of Church Stretton, known as 'Little Switzerland', before returning to Ludlow with panoramic views fromWentlock Edge for your final night.

Throughout this tour you'll stay in historic inns and hotels, ranging from Jacobean grandeur on Ludlow's beautiful High Street to Edwardian splendour in Church Stretton. There are many options in each place for evening meals, so you can pick and choose your own restaurants at leisure and according to individual budgets.
