It is amazing how quickly Mallorca rewards those who venture off the beaten track. This easy cycling holiday explores the undiscovered villages, lanes and bays of Mallorca's northeast. You begin in hidden olive-terraced valleys of the Tramuntana Mountains, home to olive mills and hill farms. From here your route skirts sun-dappled foothills through golden stone villages down to the low and level central "Es Pla" ( The Plain). This is a part of Mallorca that few people see - a gorgeous blend of sleepy villages, verdant vineards, almond orchards and patchwork wheat fields dotted with sandstone windmills, all criss-crossed by tiny rural tracks. After experiencing village life in the heart of the island for two nights, you head northwest to the historic and elegant town of Pollenca. Citrus groves, hilltop monasteries and dramatic deep blue coastal bays make for fabulous days out here, and after two nights you return to the peaceful foothills of the Tramuntana once again.
Hotels throughout your tour are of rare quality. They include a stunning family finca (farm) in the shadow of the western Tramuntana mountains set in acres of olive groves, and a glorious converted bodega in the heart of the island, where the silence is broken only by the sound of goat bells and birdsong. Your final hotel is a central mansion near Pollenca's main square, which buzzes with activity in the evenings. All have sparkling pools and offer delicious al fresco dining under the stars with dishes like rap a l'all cremat (monkfish in garlic sauce), with fresh vegetables and excellent local wines at the end of each day.
