It’s a mystery how so lovely a region can be kept quite so secret, yet Portugal’s Aveiro lagoon, and the coastline south of Porto, offers some of the most spectacular stretches of seaside cycling we have ever seen! It’s almost perfectly flat too, making it ideal for families and first timers.
Your holiday starts in Porto, where shuttered townhouses tumble downhill to colorful rabello sailing boats cruising the Douro River and passing world famous wine cellars. From here, you’ll beach and bay hop south on a perfect cycle path to the market town of Ovar, filled with azulejo tiled churches and chapels. The Aveiro lagoon, home to pink flamingo and colorful bird life then continues to Barra, below the tallest lighthouse on the Iberian peninsula – striped like a stick of seaside rock and right on the beach! From here, be sure to visit nearby Aveiro, known as ‘Portugal’s Venice’, where colorful moliceiros boats cruise canals beneath tall palm trees and alleyways are filled with tempting restaurants. You can visit Barra from here, home to the tallest lighthouse on the Iberian peninsula - striped like a stick of seaside rock and right on the beach!
Your final cycling stretch takes you on past oceanfront sand dunes, meandering through pine and acacia forest, to seaside Mira. After two nights here, we give you a lift to riverside Coimbra, Portugal’s capital in the Middle Ages and now a cosmopolitan university city. We’ve left your final day free so you can explore its cobbled alleys, markets, aqueducts, gardens and fountains – rounding off perhaps with a traditional fado evening in a local bar.
Your hotels range from a classic townhouse in Porto, to chic designer properties in Mira and Coimbra, to a luxury **** boutique beach and spa hotel in Furadouro. We have included 3 evening meals, and left you free to dine at leisure in Aveiro, Furadouro and Coimbra.
