Winter Cross Country Skiing Tours in france

Cross Country Skiing in Pailherols

  • Great value all-inclusive cross country skiing holiday; all meals and no 'hidden extras'
  • Truly outstanding cuisine; excellent choice for vegetarians too
  • Traditional family-run hotel in wonderful 'get away from it all' location
  • Covered, heated swimming pool, sauna, hamman and mini gym; intimate atmosphere – perfect for couples

Pailherols is a quaint little hamlet, hidden in the rolling mountains of theWestern Auvergne, in the Cantal, on the border with the Aveyron and about 30km/18 mi from the beautiful old town of Aurillac. Locals claim that the village is ‘a little corner of paradise’, so lovely that people can’t bear to leave. By way of proof, according to legend, even the hamlet’s statue of the Madonna makes her own way back if ever taken away!

The Auberge des Montagnes is a real treat and has earned itself a special place in the hearts of Breakaway visitors, thanks to its outstanding food, cozy atmosphere and warm hospitality. Run by André and Denise Combourieu, and their twin daughters, Coralie and Maryline, the hotel is a huddle of ancient Auvergnat farmhouses, first converted into an inn in the 1880’s and since completely restored. It now boasts 23 spacious en suite rooms, in 3 different buildings, as well as heated swimming pool, sauna, hamman, mini gym, billiard and games room.

The culinary delights that you are treated to at the Auberge des Montagnes are legendary. From the local hams and sausages to the famous cheeses of Cantal and Salers – not forgetting, of course, the world-famous green lentils of Le Puy. House specialities include coquilles St Jacques en croûte feuilletéeand tournedos de fillet boeuf au foie gras. Thursdays’ dinner-dance is the gastronomic highlight of the week. There is also a popular bar and a cosy lounge with roaring log fire.

The daily programme is led by André and is ideal for beginners as well as those with some experience – it does help if you have a basic knowledge of French, but it’s not essential. You can expect to spend most mornings improving your technique and the afternoons following gentle routes through the extraordinary and historic Park Regional des Volcans. On the whole, it’s gentle, wooded skiing, with the option to try snowshoeing included in your holiday price. Longer trips can be arranged for people looking to improve style and technique. Should there be insufficient snow cover at any point during the season, then a full guided walking program will be arranged including horse-drawn outings.
