Day 5 -- San Lawrenz to Hotel Ta Cenc

Sunday, November 19, 2006
This was our final day of cycling and the final day of our tour, sadly. We decided to go off the route path a bit and take a new highway that's under construction, but open to bike traffic, to the main city on Gozo, Victoria.

The ride was a quick one and it gave us plenty of time to walk the streets of Victoria. The city is a lovely little place and certainly the most action you will find on the island. Vendors are open on the street pedaling clothes, jewelry and souvenirs. I found some of the local pepper cheese I have enjoyed during the trip to take home. A couple of us then walked up to a cute little square where we found some more yummy pastizzi and coke. Delicious!

Afterward, we walked a few blocks up to the Citadel, which is an absolute must-do when in Gozo. At 140 meters above sea level, it provides an amazing 360-degree view of the island and really puts into perspective how far -- and where -- we have cycled. We have almost circled the entire island. The Citadel dates back to 1800BC and the Phoenicians, but also includes structures from the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and the Knights of St. John. Inside you'll find the Cathedral, old prisons, shops and even several museums.

After we walked the entire Citadel, we hopped back on our bikes and made our way to the Hotel Ta Cenc, where we started our trip. We passed through several small towns and did a few more hills before we arrived at our final destination. After a lovely swim in their heated indoor/outdoor pool and a dip in the hot tub, we enjoyed dinner and even dined on steak cooked by the hotel General Manager in front of us. It was lovely!

Then it was off to bed, as we have an early rise tomorrow to make the ferry to Malta, so we can catch the first flight out to London.
