Hungary
The Hungarians are descended from horse-riding nomads who migrated from central Asia before the Middle Ages.
The broad steppe-like plains round Lake Balaton may have reminded them of home, and they settled there permanently, retaining to this day their own non-Indo-European language, Magyar, which is distantly related to Finnish and Turkish. The Magyars have taken enthusiastically to urban life, and Budapest, straddling the River Danube, is one of Europe’s most magnificent capitals.
There are hills in Hungary, but no mountains, and a cycling tour is the best way to explore this fascinating land. Our route extends from the wine-growing region of Eger to Szentendre, an historic town on the Danube, and culminates with a boat trip and a night in a floating hotel.
